SS Matt Elam still out with concussion

Florida freshman Matt Elam, the team’s second-string strong safety, suffered a concussion against LSU and has not yet been cleared to play this week vs. Mississippi State.

Elam was at this afternoon’s practice, but did not participate.

“He observed practice today,” safeties coach Chuck Heater said. “We’ll reevaluate tomorrow.

“They have a whole systematic approach to these things so I just defer to the trainers. I think he’s making progress. He’s certainly better than he was two days ago and he’s able to do more things today than he did yesterday, so he’s making progress.”

Jack Daniels, who coached Elam at Dwyer High School, said this week Elam did not sustain any concussions during his high school career.

Elam blitzed LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and pressured him into a interception late in the first quarter Saturday. He hit Jefferson as he threw the pass and sustained the concussion on impact.

Elam has nine tackles this year, including a sack, and a fumble recovery. He has played in every game.
