Florida Gators caught in a free fall

It is all so unfamiliar for the Florida Gators.

They are unremarkable, unimposing and, for the first time since the Urban Meyer era at UF began in 2005, unranked.

The once-mighty Gators dropped out of the Top 25 with Saturday's 10-7 homecoming loss to Mississippi State - their third consecutive defeat -- and the free fall could continue if a solution isn't found for an anemic offense they sputters week in and week out.

Meyer knows it.

``I think so,'' Meyer replied when asked if he felt a need for an overhaul as the Gators prepare for the next opponent, Georgia, on Oct. 30. ``We're not very good right now.''

The players know it.

``If that's what Coach Meyer thinks that's what we need to do; we're all for it,'' quarterback John Brantley said of changes that could be forthcoming.

The Gators need to do something, and fast, to get back on track.

Suddenly, the Gators don't seem to tower over their five upcoming opponents in a way that suggests it will all get better overnight.

Georgia has outscored Tennessee and Vanderbilt 84-14 the past two weeks. One week after toppling No. 1 Alabama, South Carolina suffered a letdown in its loss to Kentucky but still looms as the Gators' greatest roadblock to reaching the SEC title game. Florida State has returned to prominence. Even Appalachian State -- a non-BCS school -- is unbeaten and the top-ranked Football Championship Subdivision team.

Only Vanderbilt looks like a safe bet for a win. Well, relatively safe.

The way the Gators are struggling to put up points, who knows?

The offense has scored only four touchdowns during the school's first three-game losing streak since 1999 and repeatedly comes up empty when it is able to penetrate deep inside opposition territory.

On Saturday, the Gators scored only once -- on Omarius Hines' third-quarter touchdown run -- in their three possessions inside the 20.

As a result, blame is being pointed at all directions, from Brantley to offensive coordinator Steve Addazio to the offensive line to you name it.

``A lot of people think it's Coach Addazio's play-calling,'' said UF center Mike Pouncey. ``It's definitely not that. It's definitely not the play-calling because the play-calling's there.''

So what is it then?

Pouncey and others point to injuries to several of the team's key playmakers, and even its placekicker. The Gators are counting on players such as tailback Jeff Demps returning to full health during the two weeks leading to the Georgia showdown.

``We got to get the players back that we need to play,'' Pouncey said. ``We've got to get our playmakers back in the game.''

Said Meyer: ``We were down to zero backs at one point [Saturday]. It's tough to get the running game going.''

The passing game hasn't been much better.

And, with Caleb Sturgis out with a back injury, the placekicking duties are being handled by punter Chas Henry, who missed on attempts of 38 and 42 yards against MSU.

All in all, it adds up to tough times in Gainesville, times like those not experienced in years.

``I can't remember the last time I lost three games in a row in my whole life,'' Pouncey said. ``This is one of the toughest times in my whole life. It's tough, but nobody's mad at nobody.

``We're going to stick through this adversity.''
