Florida sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) reached the semifinals of the men’s USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla., on Sunday before falling to third-seeded Clint Bowles of Florida State.
Bangoura posted an impressive straight-sets quarterfinal win over Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez, the tournament’s No. 1 seed and the fourth-ranked player nationally. Bangoura broke serve at 5-5 in each set against Gomez on the way to a 7-5, 7-5 victory.
“I thought overall we had a good showing this weekend,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “It was a great run by Sekou to make it into the semifinals, and now we have to get back to work and continue preparing for the spring.”
Bangoura came up short in the afternoon’s semifinals against Bowles, the nation’s 43rd-ranked player.
Senior Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France) has already qualified for November’s USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., and did not compete in the singles draw this weekend.
UF sophomore Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) both earned a quarterfinal appearance, as well, but were defeated in their respective matches.
