Austin Peay Rallies Past Florida In NCAA Tourney Opener, 4-3; Gators In Elimination Bracket Saturday

Junior Michael Davis belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit for second-seeded Austin Peay (46-13) into an eventual 4-3 victory over third-seeded Florida (29-29) in the opening game of the NCAA Bloomington Regional on Friday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field.

With its 16th-straight triumph, the longest winning streak in the nation, the Govs advance to tomorrow’s winner’s bracket contest against either top-seeded Indiana (43-14) or fourth-seeded Valparaiso (31-26) at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Gators will play either the Hoosiers or Crusaders in an elimination game at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.

Florida sophomore Justin Shafer (Lake Wales, Fla.) had erased a 1-0 lead for Austin Peay with a three-run dinger in the sixth inning that had moved the Orange and Blue in front. After sophomore right-hander Ryan Harris (Jupiter, Fla.) (5-4) replaced junior southpaw Daniel Gibson (Lutz, Fla.) (0.2 IP) prior to the home part of the eighth, junior Craig Massoni (2-for-4) blooped a leadoff single into right field and senior Reed Harper bounced a single off of Harris’ leg for two runners aboard. A fielder’s choice by senior Cody Hudson erased Harper at second base and moved Massoni to third base before Hudson swiped second to give the Govs a pair of runners in scoring position. Davis then stepped to the plate and delivered his fifth homer of the year over the wall in left field to provide APSU with a 4-3 advantage.

Senior Tyler Rogers, the Division I leader in saves, took the mound for the ninth after a pair of scoreless frames by junior Kacy Kemmer (6-0) and plunked Shafer to start the Gators’ final at bat. The righty had senior Vickash Ramjit (Miami, Fla.) ground into a 4-6-3 double play and had sophomore Josh Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.) ground out to secure his 22nd save. Junior righty Jonathon Crawford (Okeechobee, Fla.) was not involved in the decision after permitting one run on four hits in 6.1 innings.

The Govs put their first two runners of the game aboard against but were kept at bay by Crawford. After redshirt sophomore Dylan Riner drew a leadoff walk, junior Jordan Hankins (2-for-4) punched a single into left field. Crawford worked out of the jam by having Massoni ground into a 5-3 double play and then had Harper ground out to Tobias.

Austin Peay opened the scoring in the fourth inning on an RBI grounder by Hudson that brought across Hankins, who had started the frame with a double into the gap in right center field. A ground ball by Massoni advanced Hankins to third base and Harper earned a free pass for runners on the corners with one down. Hudson broke the ice with a grounder to senior shortstop Cody Dent (Boynton Beach, Fla.) that scored Hankins. Although Harper swiped third, Crawford struck out Davis to hold the Gators’ deficit at one run.

Tobias began the fifth with a base-hit through the left side of the infield off of junior starter Zach Hall and was sacrificed into scoring position by freshman Harrison Bader (Bronxville, N.Y.) (2-for-2). Hall responded by having freshman Brady Roberson (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Dent each fly out.

In the bottom of the frame, junior P.J. Torres (2-for-4) reached on a one-out throwing error by Dent and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by sophomore Brett Carlson. Riner was plunked for two Govs aboard and Crawford responded with an inning-ending strikeout of Hankins to hold the score at 1-0.

Consecutive one-out walks to sophomores Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Taylor Gushue (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the sixth inning prompted a pitching change, as redshirt junior Lee Ridenhour took over for Hall. Shafer greeted the reliever with a towering three-run homer to left field to give the Gators their first lead of the afternoon. It was his fifth big fly of the campaign to tie Gushue and Turgeon for the team lead and was his first round-tripper since April 26 against Tennessee. Over 5.1 innings, Hall gave up three hits and was charged with two runs, with three strikeouts and three walks.

In the seventh, Torres singled to right field with one down and took second base on a fielding error by Dent that enabled Carlson to reach on a fielder’s choice. Gibson was summoned to the bullpen for Crawford (6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 K, 4 BB) and stunted the potential rally with a strikeout of Riner before having Hankins fly out to right center field.

Austin Peay held an 8-5 edge in hits and did not commit any errors, while the Gators had a couple of fielding miscues.

Gators Drop WCWS Opener vs. Tennessee, Will Face Nebraska Saturday in Elimination Game

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Tennessee softball squad used three runs in the first, four in the fourth and a two-run seventh inning to take the 2013 Women’s College World Series opener between the Gators (57-8) and Lady Vols (50-10), 9-2, in front of a crowd of 7,911 at Oklahoma City’s ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Florida narrowed Tennessee’s early 3-0 lead to 3-2 with a two-run fifth frame, but UT added six more unanswered runs to pull out the opening-round win.

In the double-elimination WCWS format, the Gators will next match up with 14th-seeded Nebraska (45-15) Saturday at noon (ET) on ESPN2 as the Huskers fell to Washington 4-3 in eight innings in the opening game of the 2013 WCWS Thursday morning when Kimberlee Souza knocked a walk-off homer for the Huskies in the bottom of the eighth. The Gators and Huskers have met just twice in program history, with the series record tied 1-1. Florida and Nebraska last met March 11, 2011 in Clearwater, Fla., as a part of the USF Under Armour Showcase. The Huskers edged Florida, 1-0, in the clash.

Florida junior ace Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) (0.1 IP 1 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K) faced Tennessee hurler Ellen Renfroe (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 9 K) in the circle as both earned the starts, while Gator sophomore pitchers Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) (6.1 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) and Alyssa Bache (Clearwater, Fla.) (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) both saw action, Haeger tossing a bulk of the innings in relief, as Rogers (33-6) took the loss, E. Renfroe (18-4) the victory.

A bases-loaded walk and a two-run double from Tennessee’s Melissa Brown gave the Lady Vols a 3-0 edge in the top of the first and Florida went to work in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kirsti Merritt (Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.) drew a one-out walk and Haeger reached after a Tennessee fielding error for runners on first and second, but the Gators couldn’t push a run across.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Taylore Fuller (Trenton, Fla.) drilled her first WCWS base hit down the left-field line for the Gators’ first hit of the afternoon – a ball that ricocheted off the third-base umpire, but UF didn’t capitalize until the bottom of the fifth after three scoreless innings for both squads in the second, third and fourth frames.

After a leadoff walk from sophomore Jess Damico (Gray Summit, Mo.) in the fifth, followed by a stolen base, freshman Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) ripped her nation-leading 10th triple of the season to the left-center gap, plating Damico and narrowing the Lady Vols’ lead, 3-1. With two down, junior Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif.) struck next by ripping a single to shallow center to score Stewart.

The Orange and Blue juiced the bags after a Haeger hit-by-pitch and senior Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.) walk, but a fielder’s choice for freshman first baseman Taylor Schwarz (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) ended the Gators’ fifth-inning threat.

Tennessee added four runs in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of two uncharacteristic Florida defensive errors, followed by a Kat Dotson two-RBI double to the right-field line and a Lauren Gibson RBI double down the left-field line for the 7-2 Lady Vols advantage following the top of the sixth.

Florida left two on in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff walk from Fuller and a Stewart infield single before UT added two runs in the top of the seventh in form of a Haeger wild pitch, followed by a Dotson RBI triple to deep center for the 9-2 advantage.

Three straight groundouts in the bottom of the seventh preserved Tennessee’s lead as the Lady Vols took their second of four games between the two teams so far this season Thursday.

Florida is now 11-10 (.523) all-time in the WCWS. The Orange and Blue own a 48-30 (.615) all-time record in the NCAA Tournament, including a 43-20 (.683) record under eighth year head coach Tim Walton. Tennessee’s nine runs were the most given up by the Gators this season and the most against the Lady Vols since May 13, 1999 (11).

Gators Match Second Round Score on Final Day at NCAA Championships

The University of Florida men’s golf team recorded a 283 (+3) on the final day of stroke play of the 2013 NCAA Championships on Thursday, May 30 in Woodstock, Ga. UFscored a 857 (+17) for the three rounds of stroke play. The top-eight teams advance to match play, which will decide the national champion. Florida finished in 25th place and did not advance to match play.

“Unfortunately, more of the same,” head coach Buddy Alexander stated. “We actually got off to a great start this morning. There’s a tough stretch of holes, the 15th through the 18th. I knew if we got by that then maybe we could have a special day, but those holes just ate us alive. The last nine was just so-so.”

As Alexander stated, the Gators got off to a great start. The team was five-under par through the first two holes. Four of the five players in the lineup recorded at least one birdie in the first two holes. Again, as Alexander said, once the team got to the crucial stretch at the end of the first nine, they could not maintain the positive momentum.

Sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was the team’s lowest scorer for the final round of stroke play at the Capital City Club – Crabapple Course. Banks used two birdies on his back nine to propel him to lowest score of the 2013 NCAA Championships. The sophomore finished stroke play in 214 strokes (+4).

Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) finished at even par, his best round of the national tournament. Vogel opened his round with birdies on three of the first five holes. He struggled on the latter part of the front nine, finishing the first nine at even par. Vogel matched Banks’ score of 214 (+4) for stroke play.

Fellow senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) put together his finest round of the event, as well. Mou recorded a one-over par on Thursday at the par 70, 7,319 yard course. After scoring two bogeys and one double-bogey in the first six holes, Mou registered three birdies to bring his total to one-over for the day. The senior finished at 11-over par.

Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) wrapped up the Gators’ lineup on the final day of stroke play. The pair each recorded a 73 (+3). McCumber tied Banks and Vogel for the best three-round total on the team, scoring a 214 (+3). Tomlinson finished stroke play in 222 strokes (+12).

With the Gators not qualifying for the match play portion of the 2013 NCAA Championships, the 2012-13 season is complete. The team recorded a victory in the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course and eight top-five finishes. In addition, the senior duo of McCumber and Vogel both garnered All-SEC and All-Southeast Region honors for the second straight year.

McCumber, Mou, and Vogel will all depart Gainesville, but the team returns a strong foundation for next season. Banks and Tomlinson will be back for the junior years, while A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) will be a sophomore with solid experience.
