Florida softball advances to College World Series

Gainesville was Dogpile City again on Sunday.

Florida's softball team defeated Alabama-Birmingham in dramatic fashion by throwing out the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. UF's 1-0 win sends the Gators to the Women's College World Series for the fifth time in the last six years.

Lauren Webster's grounder up the middle was smothered by second baseman Kelsey Stewart, who then threw home to easily get pinch-runner Hailey Glynn to end the game.

Florida had little trouble getting runners into scoring position but struggled at the plate once they were there. After a 1-2-3 first inning, UF put runners on second or third in the next five innings but went 1-for-11, wasting several opportunities.

It was Schwarz who came up with the one RBI of the game for the Gators when she roped a double to left field off the wall to score pinch-runner Ensley Gammel from second in the fourth inning.

Florida ace Hannah Rogers went the distance while surrendering only four hits with seven strikeouts.
The Gators are now 57-7 and face Tennessee Thursday in Oklahoma City.
