--Meyer said that Florida needs to develop a rotation at wide receiver. "I did not realize at the time that Deonte Thompson and Carl Moore and some of those kids played every snap," Meyer said. "I think that is the first time that's ever happened here at Florida. You have to get a rotation in there."
Meyer said that means backup WR Frankie Hammond Jr., who missed last week's game while suspended due to a DUI arrest, will play this week, "if he does what he is supposed to do the rest of the week."
--Florida DT Jaye Howard was named SEC defensive lineman of the week following his two-sack, five- tackle performance.
--Meyer was disappointed in his team's perimeter blocking, which he said negated potential big plays. "Our edge blocking is something that we take great pride in around here and our receivers have to improve at," Meyer said. "When I talk about perimeter blocking, we have fast guys. The first four plays of the game, if we execute on the edge we have big plays, and that didn't happen."
--Both Meyer and Florida quarterback John Brantley said they were satisfied with the play-calling of offensive coordinator Steve Addazio. Florida settled for several short and intermediate passes rather than taking shots deep downfield. "You take what the defense gives you, so when you see underneath throws a lot of times there is an intermediate guy," Meyer said. "If they play deep, you throw short. If they play short, you go deep. The play calling was all right. I think we had to do what we had to do to find a way to win the game."
--Florida quarterback John Brantley spent the Sunday morning after the Miami of Ohio game working with center Mike Pouncey on the center-snap exchange. Three muffed snaps led to one turnover and two other long losses. "I don't know if it was the heat, the sweaty hands, I don't know what it was, but we're figuring that out," Brantley said. "We figured that out yesterday, and we're going to keep building on that this week." Pouncey said he's adjusted his grip on the football.
SERIES HISTORY
This is the first meeting between the two programs.
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
Florida ran about 50 percent of its offensive plays under center and another 50 percent out of the shotgun, Meyer said he would like to remain a shotgun team, despite the snapping woes. "It's not just 'cause we like the shotgun," Meyer said. "It's because we like to get away from the rush." On the ground, Florida averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. The Gators will need to block better to create holes for speedy big-play backs that aren't strong enough to break tackles on their own.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
The Gators had a pretty good debut under first-year defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. Florida held Miami of Ohio to just four yards rushing and the secondary came up big with four interceptions. Florida would like to improve its pass rush after recording just two sacks against the RedHawks.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It was not a beauty pageant. If it was, we would have lost." -- Florida coach Urban Meyer, on his team's performance against Miami of Ohio.
