Florida will name Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach Dan Quinn its defensive coordinator under new head coach Will Muschamp, sources told The Gainesville Sun on Monday. UF later confirmed the hire.
Quinn will remain with the Seahawks through their NFL playoff run, the sources said.
Muschamp, an accomplished defensive coordinator, will also assist with that side of the ball.
“Dan and I worked on the Miami Dolphins’ staff together and is one of the best I’ve been around in terms of teaching fundamentals,” Muschamp said. “He understands how defenses will need to be multiple and how to put players in a position to be successful.
"The Seattle organization has been great in coordinating the hiring of Dan to our staff and we wish them the best of luck in the playoffs.”
Quinn joined Seattle last January after spending the previous six years coaching the defensive lines for the San Francisco 49ers (2003-04), Miami Dolphins (2005-06) and the New York Jets (2007-08). He began his NFL coaching career in San Francisco as its defensive quality control coach in 2001 before moving to the defensive line.
He began his collegiate coaching career at William & Mary in 1994 and at Virginia Military Institute in 1995, working with their defensive lines.
Quinn coached with Muschamp while with the Dolphins.
Quinn then spent five years at Hofstra University, coaching the defensive line for four years before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2000.
He was a four-year letterman as a defensive lineman at Salisbury State (Md.), where he was a co-captain in 1992 and 1993.
Quinn and his wife, Stacey, initiated the Quinn's Corps Program in 2004 to help children and families in need.
