Cory McGee Named SEC Female Freshman of the Week

Following an impressive debut in the first track and field meet of her collegiate career this past weekend at the Nittany Lion Challenge, Florida distance runner Cory McGee (Pass Christian, Miss.) has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Female Freshman of the Week, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Tuesday.

After her first week of collegiate competition, McGee holds the NCAA’s top time by a freshman in both the women’s mile and the women’s 3,000-meter run. She ranks fourth nationally in the mile and seventh in the nation in the 3,000m, overall.

McGee won the mile at the Nittany Lion Challenge, setting a new meet record in the process by clocking a personal-best time of 4:46.70, which currently ranks fourth in the nation. The other three top mile times in the NCAA this season have all been recorded by seniors. McGee, who directed a 1-2-4 finish by the Gators in the mile on Saturday, currently holds the top mile time in the SEC this season.

McGee followed that performance up with a second-place finish in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:43.72. Her 3,000m time currently is seventh nationally this season.

McGee and the Gators return to action Jan. 28-29, traveling to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Texas A&M Challenge.
