For the second consecutive week, University of Florida gymnast Alaina Johnson (Tyler, Texas) is the Southeastern Conference Freshman Gymnast of the Week. Georgia senior Cassidy McComb is the SEC Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Johnson opened the Florida-Kentucky meet last Friday with a win on vault (9.95) and her second consecutive win on the uneven bars (9.925). She also finished in a four-way tie for third place on the floor exercise with a 9.85.
The newcomer also nabbed the first SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week award on Jan. 13 after an impressive debut in the dual meet against Nebraska. Her 39.425 all-around score was the second-highest ever by a Gator in her debut, behind Samantha Lutz with a 39.45 in 2004.
In the current Gym Info national rankings (based on total season average) - Johnson is No. 2 in all-around (39.425), No. 7 in vault (9.90), No. T2 in uneven bars (9.925) and T7 in floor (9.875).
Johnson’s award gives the Gator program its ninth SEC Freshman of the Week honor since the start of the 2010 season. Last year, a Gator picked up seven of the 11 possible SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week honors. AshanĂ©e Dickerson claimed the award four times and Marissa King picked up three honors.
This Friday, No. 1 Florida will face No. 24 LSU in Baton Rouge, La., for the Gators’ first road meet of the season. The meet will be broadcast tape-delayed on Sun Sports on Jan. 30 at 8:30 a.m.
