The hiring of Bryant Young became official Saturday, with an announcement from new Florida coach Will Muschamp that the former All-Pro defensive tackle will coach the Gators' defensive line.
"Bryant is a great addition to our coaching staff," Muschamp said. "We want to be a program built on toughness — both physically and mentally, and there are not too many people tougher than Bryant. He was a leader, blue-collar player and a winner. He will demand his player to have the same attributes."
Young was considered one of the NFL's dominant defensive players during his era and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection (1996, 1999, 2001 and 2002) with the San Francisco 49ers..
He brings 14 years of NFL playing experience and a Super Bowl ring to a UF staff that already has 40 years of NFL coaching experience and four Super Bowl rings.
Young began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Notre Dame, in 2009, where he worked under head coach Charlie Weis, the new UF offensive coordinator. This past season, Young was the defensive line coach at San Jose State.
Young will coach the Florida defensive line along with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, the defensive line coach with the Seattle Seahawks, who are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Quinn coached Young in San Francisco for four seasons (2001-04).
