University of Florida sophomore Ashanée Dickerson (Jacksonville, Fla.) is the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Georgia’s Lindsey Cheek is the Freshman Gymnast of the Week.
This is Dickerson’s first Gymnast of the Week honor of the season and the second in her career. In 2010, she picked up four Freshman Gymnast of the Week honors. She was also named the SEC Freshman of the Year last season.
In last Friday’s road meet against then No. 24 LSU, Dickerson claimed a share of each of the evening’s five event titles, posting a 39.475 overall to collect the 10th all-around title of her young career. She is the first Gator since former All-American Chrissy Van Fleet in the 2000 season to sweep a meet’s event titles.
The sophomore claimed sole possession of the balance beam (9.825), vault (9.90) and floor exercise (9.95) titles and shared her uneven bars win (9.80) with teammates Nicole Ellis, Alicia Goodwin and Elizabeth Mahlich and LSU’s Sarie Morrison. Dickerson has claimed an all-around title in 10 of the 17 meets the Gators have competed in during her collegiate career, including each of Florida’s three 2011 meets.
In the current national rankings, Dickerson holds the No. 3 position in all-around with her season average of 39.417. She also ranks No. T2 in floor (9.917), No. T6 vault (9.908) and No. T21 in bars (9.825).
This Friday, No. 1 Florida goes up against No. 13 NC State and No. 23 Penn State in the Gators Link to Pink meet presented by UnitedHealthcare. Meet time is set for 7 p.m. (ET) in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
