The Florida gymnastics team is the No. 1 team in the first national rankings released by GymInfo on Monday.
The first six rankings of the season are based on total season average before moving to regional qualifying score. The Gators' score of 196.925 against Nebraska last Friday, which was the second-highest season-opening score inUF history, ranks as the highest of this very young season. Stanford’s 196.625 at the Pac-10 Showcase ranks No. 2.
UF last owned the No. 1 ranking for the opening week of the 2009 season and for the first two weeks of the 2008 campaign. In 2007,UF held the top spot 11 of the 12 weeks, including eight in a row. That was the highest number of No. 1 rankings ever for the Gators in a single season. Prior to the 2007 season, Florida had held the No. 1 ranking only three times since the weekly list began in 1987.
UF’s event totals rank the team among the top five for each event in the current national lists. The Gators are No. 1 on floor and tied for first on beam plus No. 2 on vault and No. 5 on bars.
The Gators (1-0) host Kentucky Friday night at 7.
