Florida quarterback John Brantley attended a team meeting Wednesday morning and is enrolled in classes at UF for the spring semester, but he still has not decided whether he will return for his senior season or pursue a playing opportunity elsewhere.
Brantley's father, John Brantley III, said a decision won't be made until after the Brantley family has a chance to meet new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who will remain with the Kansas City Chiefs through the NFL playoffs. If the Chiefs make a run in the playoffs, it could be several weeks before Brantley has a chance to have a face-to-face meeting with Weis.
"We want to meet Coach Weis before John does anything," John Brantley III said Wednesday. "That may not be for a while."
Weis, the former Notre Dame coach, has a reputation for developing quarterbacks, and his pro-style offense would be considered a much more comfortable fit for Brantley, a drop-back passer who struggled with many aspects of Urban Meyer's spread-option offense.
Two other prominent juniors — safety Will Hill and cornerback Janoris Jenkins — are expected to put their names in the NFL Draft, although neither has declared yet. The deadline is Jan. 15. Hill and Jenkins were not at Wednesday's team meeting with new head coach Will Muschamp.
While the Gators are expected to lose those two players, the UF roster will add eight high school commitments who are enrolling at UF this semester.
Lakeland wide receiver Javares McCroy, Venice defensive end Clay Burton, punter Kyle Christy and offensive lineman Tommy Jordan are already enrolled. Four more UF commitments — quarterback Jeff Driskel, tight end/athlete A.C. Leonard, athlete Pop Saunders and running back Mike Blakely — will begin taking classes following their participation in high school all-star games this week.
Driskel, Leonard and Saunders played in the Under Armour All-America High School Football game Wednesday night in St. Petersburg. Blakely is playing in the Army All-American game in San Antonio on Saturday.
