Florida's Vongvanij Earns SEC Golfer of the Week Honors

Senior golfer Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week, the SEC announced on Thursday.

Vongvanij recorded a first-place finish and a tie for second in Florida’s two tournaments of the spring season after three top-five finishes and a medalist honor in the three fall tournaments. The Gators have won both of this season’s spring tournaments so far.

His five-under-par 211 was strong enough to capture medalist honors at the Jacksonville University Invitational (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) at the players Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra, Fla. He had first and second round 69’s and shot a 73 in the third round to claim the victory.

He shot a three-round 210 in the SunTrust Gator Invitational (Feb. 12-13) to tie for second place. After the regulation 54 holes, Vongvanij was one of four golfers tied for the lead. In a playoff, teammate Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) took the individual title.

Vongvanij is ranked second nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, which takes into account all scores from the fall and spring. In addition, he was recently named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, an award presented annually to the top men’s college golfer.
