Vongvanij Leads Florida Men's Golf to No. 1 SEC Ranking

University of Florida senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) was named to the SEC Fall Golf Honor Roll and led the team to a No. 1 ranking in the SEC after the completion of the fall season. He was also ranked first individually in the SEC going into the spring season.

Vongvanij was one of 12 golfers picked in the conference after recording three top-five finishes in Florida’s three fall tournaments. He became the first Florida golfer to win the Isleworth Invitational, coming back from 22nd place after the first round to claim the title.  He finished second at the Olympia Fields Invitational and shot a 207 (3 under par).  In the tournament, he led the Gators to a first-place finish with a tournament team 54-hold scoring record.  He finished tied for fifth at the Jerry Pate Invitational with a two-under-par 208.  He has shot at least one round in the 60s in each tournament this fall and finished under par in each of the three tournaments.  He made 30 birdies during the fall season.

Sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was ranked fifth in the individual SEC standings, senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) was 11th, sophomores Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) were reanked 12th and 31st, respectively.

As a team, the Gators recorded three top-three finishes in their three tournaments for the first time since 2003 and faced 23 ranked opponents over the course of the fall season. Alabama is ranked behind Florida in second place after winning the Isleworth Invitational, but the Gators finished higher in the previous two tournaments.

Florida will begin its spring season with the JU Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. on Feb. 1 and 2, 2011.
