University of Florida assistant track coach Todd Morgan, who oversees the cross country program, addressed the media Monday morning as part of the Gators' All-Sports Media Day.
Coach Morgan shared his assessment of the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championships, as the women’s team won its second consecutive league title.
The team title, which Florida won by one point (60) over Arkansas (61), marked the program’s fifth all-time title and was the second time in program history the Gators have won back-to-back team titles after also winning in 1996 and 1997. UF's men additionally rose to the challenge at the 2010 conference meet, securing third place, the best team finish for the UF men since 2007. The Gator men’s squad finished in the top five at the conference meet for the 14th consecutive year and in the top three for the seventh season out of the last nine.
A total of eight Gators were named All-SEC selections, including three SEC All-Freshman team honorees (two women, one male) and assistant track and cross country coach Todd Morgan was named the 2010 SEC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, UF’s second coaching honor since 1997 and fifth overall.
Coach Morgan then discussed and fielded questions about the NCAA South Region Championships in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 13. Last year, UF's women punched their ticket to NCAAs in Terre Haute with a first-place team finish (of 23) at the South Region meet, while Florida's men finished fifth of the 26 teams. He also talked more about the women’s SEC race, on freshman Cory McGee and on coming out on the winning side of a close meet.
