Gator fans Uninspired but Loyal

The problems with the football team have left loyal Gator fans uninspired at best this year.

The Gainesville Sun reported a story of a ticket buyer and seller, Bobby D.

" Bobby D. was in distress Saturday morning. "

"He had a clutch of University of Florida football tickets in a cardboard envelope shortly before kickoff and few buyers. And what customers he did have were paying $20, nowhere close to the $45 face value."

"No buyers. The only people buying are Appalachian State people," he said. "When you lose three games at home — we are notorious for having fair-weather fans, notorious for spoiled fans since (former coach) Steve Spurrier got here. When I first got out here, I wasn't sure there was a game today."

"D'Alessio — his real last name, though people call him Bobby D. — wasn't alone among ticket sellers having trouble. And businesses that make a bunch of money off Gator fans said sales have been off as well because of UF's less-than-stellar season."

Message boards like Scout.com and Rivals.com are full of posts from fans criticizing the offensive play calling, Urban Meyer's desire to coach, the abilities of John Brantley, whether Steve Addazio is qualified to be the offensive coordinator and other theories on why the team has lost 4 games, and 3 straight at home.

One poster on Fightin' Gators, the Scout site posted, "As long as we have Urban Meyer the future will always be bright. The man has NEVER had an unsuccessful program. A program’s success is not determined after one season. We have a huge amount of freshman and red shirt freshman getting valuable playing experience this season. We will experience the dividends of that playing time in future seasons. This spring will be a chance for reflection and tweaks. Meyer will not disappoint."

Yet, another poster typed this: "I have never seen so many issues with one team. It started with all the off field problems and arrests...then to our lack of preperation for games and terrible play and now it looks like the chemistry on the team is as bad as ever and we could be facing at least 20-25% of frosh class transferring in the first year of being here.  We have players parents openly displaying their frustrations and now this...What is going on?"

Everyone wants the ship righted, and a win over FSU this weekend will be a step in the right direction. But the turnout for the App. State game on Senior Day was not what we are use to in Gainesville, and as pointed out in the beginning of this column, tickets were hard to give away. Expectations from the fans are high at Florida, and hopefully, the coaches feel the same way.
