Senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) made six birdies and no bogeys to earn a first-place finish and lead the Florida Men’s Golf team to a second place finish after the first round on Friday at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
Vongvanij made two birdies in the first 13 holes before making four birdies in the last five holes to finish out the 18-hole round.
“Bank had a great round today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “He played well on this course last year and it was nice to see him continue to play well.”
Sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) made four birdies and one bogey for a score of 69 at three-under par.
Redshirt senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) made two birdies and two bogeys to shoot even par for the day and finish in a tie for 15th place.
Junior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) made a career-best five birdies between five bogeys and a double bogey to finish the day three-over par and sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) finished the day five-over par with a score of 77.
“We had a solid day, but we still struggled to get a fourth score,” said Alexander. “We are hopeful for tomorrow.”
Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) played as an individual for Florida and finished in a tie for 25th.
