Senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) led the Florida Men’s Golf team to a third-place finish for the third and final round on Saturday at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. The Gators have now finished in the top three in six of their seven tournaments so far this season.
Vongvanij and Choi finished in a tie for sixth place with a team-best score of 219. It gave Florida its 18th top-10 finish by four different individuals in its first seven tournaments.
“We didn’t have a very good day,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “The conditions were bad, but I am disappointed in the effort. When the conditions are like this, it’s more about heart than it is about golf. We will keep working and keep getting better.”
Redshirt-senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) shot a 221 for a five-over par to finish in a tie for 13th and sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) added another top-20 finish with his tie for 16th with a score of 223.
Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) made two birdies in the third round to finish the tournament with a score of 231.
The Gators will compete again Friday, March 18 through Sunday, March 20 at the Chris Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
