UF notebook: Will Muschamp's new system focus of practice

— Florida held its second spring practice Friday, and new coach Will Muschamp said while there were some positives during the session, practice thus far has been dominated by the implementation of his system.

"There's a lot of teaching going on," he said. "There is a lot of learning about our tempo, and how we want to do things. The kids need to understand we're going to continue to install things, and they've got to be able to handle that. And as coaches, we've got to be able to do a nice job knowing when is too much."

Muschamp said quarterback John Brantley threw well Friday, and he also liked the execution by his first-team defense and how the receivers caught the ball.

Additionally, the backfield tandem of Chris Rainey and Trey Burton has impressed coaches early.

Position for Thompson: On Thursday, senior wide receiver Deonte Thompson commented on the spring preliminary depth charts listing him as the team's slot receiver.

"I think it was a misprint," he said. "I haven't been in the slot yet."

With offensive coordinator Charlie Weis using more standard two-receiver packages, the slot position is unlikely to see as much playing time as last year, but Thompson said he worked at the two outside receiving spots during the team's first practice Wednesday.

However, Muschamp said Friday that Thompson could play either position depending on what formation is called.

Offensive linemen updates: Muschamp updated the statuses of some of the Gators' offensive linemen, saying tackle Matt Patchan, who missed the entire 2010 season with a wrist injury, has been cleared for exercise but not contact.

Guard James Wilson is practicing, but he is taking limited reps in his return from a knee injury suffered against Miami (Ohio) last year.
