The Florida gymnastics team moved into
the No. 1 spot in this week’s GymInfo
national rankings.
The Gators posted the
nation’s eighth-highest score of 2012 in the team’s road meet at Auburn last
Friday, earning a 197.50-196.875 victory over the Tigers. That score brought
Florida’s season average to 196.929, enough to propel the Gators to No. 1 from
last week’s No. 2 spot. Oklahoma ranks No. 2 this week with a 196.784 season
average, and Georgia and Alabama are tied at No. 3 with 196.725 averages.
Florida is the fifth team
to hold the No. 1 spot this season. The first week of 2012 finished with Nebraska
ranked No. 1, followed by Arkansas/UCLA at the top in the second week of the
season. Utah claimed sole ownership of the No. 1 position in weeks three
through five.
This marks the 29th
occasion that the Gators have been ranked No. 1 since 2006. Prior to 2006, the last time UF ranked as the No. 1
team was Feb. 4, 1989.
Florida’s season average is
boosted by three additions to the Gators’ All-Time Top 20 scores. The team’s
197.850 against LSU ranks as the fifth-highest team total in program history,
and the 197.775 posted against then-No.1 Arkansas, Bridgeport and No. 24
Maryland ranks as the sixth-highest total. Last Friday’s 197.50, the nation’s
top road score of 2012, checks in as Florida’s No. 16 team total all-time.
