The College Football Performance Awards
(CFPA) announced Tuesday that junior kicker Caleb Sturgis (St.
Augustine) has won the 2011 Elite Placekicker Trophy. The award is given to the
placekicker who is responsible for the most overall team success in the NCAA
Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
Sturgis, who was a Lou Groza Award finalist,
went 22-of-26 on the season with a long of 55 yards. He ranked third in the
nation in made field goals and also ranked third in field goal makes per game
with 1.7. Additionally, the junior kicker was one of only two kickers in FBS to
have made three field goals of 50-or-more yards.
Sturgis led the Gators in scoring with 97
points and, according to the CFPA, had the second most efficient placekicking
performance in 2011 and the third most efficient placekicking performance in
the past three seasons. The CFPA also determined that Sturgis is the most
efficient placekicker returning in 2012.
The goal of the CFPA is to provide the most
scientifically rigorous conferment’s in college football. The CFPA recognizes
weekly, annual, and multi-season (career) award recipients – selected based
upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players
increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
Sturgis will be honored for his prolific 2011
season during the first half of the men’s basketball game vs. Georgia on
Tuesday night. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
