Caroline Hitimana Wins Pair of Singles Matches at Freeman Memorial Championships

The University of Florida’s Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) won a pair of singles matches to highlight the Gator’s second day of action at the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

The Gator junior advanced to the final of the consolation singles draw after defeating UCLA’s Carling Seguso (UCLA) 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) in the semifinals after downing Oregon’s Julia Metzger, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Hitimana will play Duke’s Ester Goldfield in the consolation final on Sunday afternoon.

Florida’s doubles team of Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) and Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) lost a tough 8-6 decision to Southern California’s third-ranked Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria in the quarterfinal round of the main draw.

Cercone and Janowicz lost their respective singles matches in open play on Saturday, with Cercone falling to UNC’s Lauren McHale, 6-1, 6-1 and Janowicz was down to UCLA’s McCall Jones, 6-1, 4-1, before retiring.
