Here’s a new candidate to keep a close eye on in Will Muschamp’s
search for a new offensive coordinator at Florida: Brian Schottenheimer,
the former UF quarterback who has been the offensive coordinator with
the New York Jets the past six seasons.
With the late-season meltdown by the Jets (three straight losses
that have knocked them out of the playoffs), there are reports that the
offensive coaching staff will be revamped and that Schottenheimer could
be facing a demotion.
Even if Schottenheimer holds on to his title with the Jets, there is a chance he would be interested in returning to Gainesville.
Schottenheimer fits the description of what Muschamp has said he’s looking for in a coordinator. He has 13 years’ experience in the NFL. Before becoming the Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2006, Schottenheimer was the quarterbacks coach for Washington (2001) and San Diego (2002-05).
Schottenheimer also has strong Florida ties. He transferred to UF from Kansas in 1993 with the intent to learn to be a coach from Steve Spurrier.
