Gators in position to land nation's No. 1 recruiting class

With Saturday’s commitment from five-star Shelby (N.C.) Crest defensive end Jonathan Bullard, UF coach Will Muschamp has Florida positioned to make a run at having the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class.

The Gators currently have 19 commitments with national signing day now 24 days away. UF still has room for at least six more prospects in this class and is in prime contention for several other elite recruits.

Here’s how UF ranks nationally as of Sunday morning in the nation’s top three recruiting services.

Rivals.com – 3rd.
Scout.com – 4th.
ESPN.com – 4th.

The two teams ahead of UF in Rivals’ rankings, Alabama and Texas, have several more pledges than the Gators, giving UF a strong chance to pass them both. The Crimson Tide have 26 commitments, while the Longhorns have 24.

There are five Rivals five-star players that are seriously considering UF. With Bullard and Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek offensive tackle D.J. Humphries, the Gators already have a pair of five-star commitments. Rivals lists Humphries as the nation’s third-overall prospect, while Bullard is No. 20.

Here’s a look at the top-five targets remaining for UF. All are considered five-star prospects by Rivals.com and are ranked inside the top 20 in the Rivals 100.

If Muschamp can secure signatures from two of these five, Florida would be well on its way to having an outstanding class especially if one of the two is either Diggs or Agholor. Should he land more than two, UF’s class would be truly special.

Rank    Player   Pos.     School
5          Darius Hamilton           DE       Ramsey (N.J.) Don  Boscoe Prep
8          Stefon Diggs                 WR      Olney (Md.) Good Counsel
12        Nelson Agholor            WR     Tampa Berkeley
16        Tracy Howard              CB      Miramar
19        Josh Harvey-Clemons   OLB   Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes

In addition to these five, UF also is in solid shape for three other members of the Rivals 100 who are four-star prospects.
