Racing
out to an early lead, the No. 2 University of Florida lacrosse team used a
variety of goal scorers to upend Stetson, 22-1, Tuesday evening at Donald R.
Dizney Stadium. Florida improves to 12-0 headed into American Lacrosse
Conference play against Ohio State on Saturday.
UF
posted its highest scoring margin of the year, with five Gators scoring
multiple goals including sophomore midfielder Nora Barry (Marcellus,
N.Y.), senior attack Hayley Katzenberger (Damascus, Md.) with three goals each
and freshmen Devon Schneider (Lititz, Pa.), Lauren Lea (Elkridge,
Md.) and Beth Willertz (Severn, Md.) all adding two goals.
The
Gators held a 14-1 lead at half, tying their highest scoring half of the season,
using all three of Barry’s goals and two from Katzenberger. In all, 15
different Gators scored on the evening.
“I
thought overall, Stetson did a great job coming out hard and it’s great to play
in-state competition.” Head coach Amanda O’Leary said. “We have a
tremendous amount of respect for their team and coaching staff, and their
goalie (Caili Guilday) made some great saves tonight.”
Guilday
recorded 11 saves in the game for the Hatters, who are in the midst of their
first year as a Division I program.
Barry
started the Orange and Blue’s scoring for the evening on an assisted goal from
senior attack Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.). They steadily built a lead
with goals from seven different Gators to go up 9-0.
Stetson
notched their lone goal of the night at the 13:06 mark from Melanie Fredericks
with an assists by Maylis Broderick.
Katzenberger
added two ground balls in the win, tying teammate freshman attack Darcy
Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) for a team-high. Freshman midfielder Sam
Darcangelo (Freeland, Md.) led with five draw controls followed by
sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) grabbing three. Schneider
recorded a team-high two caused turnovers in the effort.
“Overall
I thought offensively we clicked and we were solid on the defensive end and I’m
pleased tonight, it was a great team win,” O’Leary said.
