Racing out to an early lead, the No. 2 University of Florida lacrosse team used a variety of goal scorers to upend Stetson, 22-1, Tuesday evening at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Florida improves to 12-0 headed into American Lacrosse Conference play against Ohio State on Saturday.

UF posted its highest scoring margin of the year, with five Gators scoring multiple goals including sophomore midfielder Nora Barry (Marcellus, N.Y.), senior attack Hayley Katzenberger (Damascus, Md.) with three goals each and freshmen Devon Schneider (Lititz, Pa.), Lauren Lea (Elkridge, Md.) and Beth Willertz (Severn, Md.) all adding two goals.

The Gators held a 14-1 lead at half, tying their highest scoring half of the season, using all three of Barry’s goals and two from Katzenberger. In all, 15 different Gators scored on the evening.

“I thought overall, Stetson did a great job coming out hard and it’s great to play in-state competition.” Head coach Amanda O’Leary said. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for their team and coaching staff, and their goalie (Caili Guilday) made some great saves tonight.”

Guilday recorded 11 saves in the game for the Hatters, who are in the midst of their first year as a Division I program.

Barry started the Orange and Blue’s scoring for the evening on an assisted goal from senior attack Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.). They steadily built a lead with goals from seven different Gators to go up 9-0.

Stetson notched their lone goal of the night at the 13:06 mark from Melanie Fredericks with an assists by Maylis Broderick.

Katzenberger added two ground balls in the win, tying teammate freshman attack Darcy Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) for a team-high.  Freshman midfielder Sam Darcangelo (Freeland, Md.) led with five draw controls followed by sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) grabbing three.  Schneider recorded a team-high two caused turnovers in the effort.

“Overall I thought offensively we clicked and we were solid on the defensive end and I’m pleased tonight, it was a great team win,” O’Leary said.
