University
of Florida sophomore punter Kyle Christy (Brownsburg, Ind.) has been
named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week, announced by the league office
on Monday.
Christy
had a career game against No. 9 South Carolina on Saturday afternoon, when he
established a single-game school record with a 54.3 average, with a season-best
kick of 62 yards. The previous mark of 53.0 yards by Fred Montsdeoca had been
established in 1949 against Alabama.
Six
of his seven punts on the day versus the Gamecocks were for more than 50 yards,
he had a pair of touchbacks and placed one inside of the 20-yard line. In
addition, Christy’s 62-yard punt in the first quarter was his third kick
of 60-or-more yards during his career. His single-game performance was the
second-best nationally this year, behind Mike Sadler’s 55.4 average for
Michigan State against Ohio State on Sept. 29.
Christy
ranks 1st in the country with a 47.9-yard average punting. Exactly half of his
36 punts this season have been 50 yards or longer, 13 have been inside of the
20-yard line, 11 have been fair caught and four have resulted in touchbacks.
No.
3/3 Florida (7-0/6-0 SEC) will face its fourth ranked SEC opponent of the
campaign on Saturday when it faces No. 12/11 Georgia (6-1/4-1 SEC) in
Jacksonville at 3:30 p.m. on CBS. It will be the Gators’ second-straight game
against a ranked SEC opponent, and third encounter in four games versus a
Top-25 foe.
