No. 2 Women's Tennis Blanks Mississippi State, 7-0

The second-ranked Florida women’s tennis team earned their ninth shutout win of the season, blanking Mississippi State, 7-0, on Friday in Starkville.

Mississippi State (6-8, 0-5 SEC) entered the outing riding a two-match winning streak, but couldn’t keep up with the Gators on Friday. Florida (12-1, 5-0 SEC) now has a seven-match win streak and will return to Gainesville to play Ole Miss on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Florida was able to gain an early 1-0 lead, sweeping all three doubles matches. On court one, No. 3 ranked Sofie Oyen and Allie Will defeated Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran of MSU, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, UF's No. 11 ranked duo of Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather defeated Ekaterina Iakovleva and Olesya Tsigvintseva, 8-1.

Caroline Hitimana and Olivia Janowicz finished with an 8-3 victory against Mississippi State's Roseline Dion and Petra Ferancova at the No. 3 position.

The Gators took control of singles with quick wins on courts 3 and 4. At the No. 4 position, No. 39 Oyen took down the MSU’s Tran 6-1, 6-2. Mather, currently ranked at No. 19 in the nation, followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Iakovleva on court three.

Embree secured the victory for the Florida, posting the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against MSU's No. 116 ranked Perper at the No. 1 position.

Will, the nation's No. 1 ranked singles player, posted a 6-3, 6-2 win against MSU's Tsigvintseva on court two, marking the 99th singles victory her career. Hitimana completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Ferancova at the No. 5 position.
