Want a sign of how far Florida football has fallen? Just two UF players are on The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team, and the lone first-teamer is a kicker, junior Caleb Sturgis.
That's the fewest number of UF players on the team since 1979, the last season the Gators finished with a losing record.
The other All-SEC member for the 6-6 Gators is senior defensive tackle Jaye Howard, who received honorable mention.
Sturgis, a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, ranked third in the nation with 21 made field goals (1.9 per game). He connected on all 28 of his extra point attempts and is one of only two kickers in FBS to have made three field goals of 50 or more yards this season. Sturgis becomes the first Gator kicker to earn first-team All-SEC honors from the AP since Jeff Chandler in 2001.
Howard led the Gators with two fumble recoveries, including one he returned for a touchdown against Kentucky, and finished second on the team in sacks (4.0) and tackles for loss (8.5). Howard, who ranked fourth on the team with 60 total tackles, was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week on two separate occasions during the season.
