Florida coach Will Muschamp recently interviewed Jacksonville coach
and former Gators quarterback Kerwin Bell for the team's offensive
coordinator job.
Muschamp has been looking for an offensive coordinator since Charlie Weis left to take the head coaching job at Kansas.
Bell would seem to be a decent fit, having plenty of play-calling
experience, strong ties to the program and a working knowledge of
recruiting in the Sunshine State.
Bell has been Jacksonville's coach for five seasons, leading the
Dolphins to a 36-21 record and two Pioneer Football League titles. His
2010 offense led Football Championship Subdivision teams at 486.3 yards
per game.
Bell played at Florida from 1984-87, finishing with 7,585 yards
passing and 56 touchdowns. Before taking over at Jacksonville, Bell
started the football program at Ocala Trinity Catholic High, went 45-15
in five seasons and won a state title.
Bell's offenses have been balanced, but there's no question he likes
to throw the ball. Muschamp passed over Bell last year to hire Weis, a
move that did little to improve Florida's on-the-field performance. The
Gators rank 102nd in the nation in total offense, struggling to move the
ball against the best teams in the SEC.
