QB Jeff Driskel catching on to pace, playbook

On the team’s media day Friday, Muschamp talked about the back-up quarterback spot being one the coaches will have to decide on soon. While John Brantley is the clear starter, redshirt freshman Tyler Murphy and true freshmen Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett are in the competition for the No. 2 spot.
That Driskel was here for the spring semester while Brissett was finishing his senior year seems to be helping the former Oviedo Hagerty standout in camp. Muschamp said Driskel has carried over what he learned in the spring and is more comfortable.

“He was walking in after a nice ball the other day, I think it was yesterday, he walked back and I said, ‘The game’s slowed down for you a little bit, hasn’t it?’ And he said, ‘Ain’t no question, coach,’” Muschamp said. “As far as identifying the Mike (linebacker), run game, pass game, getting us in the right looks, Jeff has really progressed well.”

Muschamp also praised Murphy’s ability to manage the offense, saying he put together a “nice drive down the field” in a drill Wednesday morning. Brissett is a little further behind, Muschamp said, because of when he arrived on campus.

“Jacoby’s doing outstanding. The guy’s got a big-time arm talent, great leadership ability, is going to be a really good football player for the Gators,” he said. “He will catch up because he’s extremely intelligent, so we’re very comfortable with where we are right now.”
