GAINESVILLE — In addition to his three-year, $2.6 million contract with the Florida Gators - the richest ever for an assistant coach at Florida - offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will continue drawing checks from Notre Dame through 2015.
Also, Weis received a termination payout of $6.6 million from Notre Dame when the school fired him in 2009, according to IRS documents obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
Weis agreed to a 10-year contract with Notre Dame in 2005 and was believed to be earning nearly $3 million, based on media reports.
On top of the $6.6 million payout, Notre Dame also reported to the IRS that it will make "much smaller annual payments" to Weis over the next four years, marking what would have been the end of his 10-year deal.
Weis lost his job after going 35-27 in five years, then joined the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator for one season before accepting Florida's offer to work under coach Will Muschamp. His salary in Kansas City was unknown.
Weis' contract with the Gators included a $100,000 signing bonus, and he was the only assistant to get one.
Factoring in the signing bonus and all other guaranteed money, the average yearly value of his contract is $875,000. That is slightly less than Muschamp made as Texas' defensive coordinator last season - $900,000 - and below Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn's $1.3 million per year. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart earns an $850,000 salary.
Last season, Florida paid Steve Addazio $375,000 to be the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
The Gators signed defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, previously a defensive line coach for the Seattle Seahawks, to a two-year deal worth just over $1 million.
Florida is committed to pay Muschamp's nine assistant coaches a total of $295,000 more this year than former coach Urban Meyer's staff got in 2010. However, the Gators are saving money on Muschamp's $2.7 million salary compared to the $4 million Meyer made last year.
