Echavarria Keeps Florida in Second Place After Round Two

Redshirt-senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) fueled a Florida team into a tie for second place after falling into ninth place after the first nine holes to start the round. The Gators are tied with North Carolina State and trail leader Augusta State by four going into Saturday’s third and final round.

Echavarria shot a 71 for round one and 68 for round two and is in a tie for seventh place after making five birdies and one bogey on the day. He is four strokes behind leader Mitchell Sutton of N.C. State.

After making two bogeys on the front nine, senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) made two birdies on the back nine to shoot even par on the day and finish in a tie for 10th.

“We got off to a rough start and to be honest, there is a little sense of relief that the field didn’t run away from us today, because we really played poorly on the front nine,” Florida head coach Buddy Alexander said. “We really rallied on the back nine, but obviously, this field isn’t separating a whole lot.”

Sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) made five bogeys, two birdies and his third eagle of the season on hole 12 for a 73.

Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) matched his first round score with a 74 and junior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) shot a 77.

“I think the course has been pretty easy because the weather conditions have been so perfect,” Alexander said. “That’s great and fun to play in, but it really doesn’t separate the field much. I don’t think we’re going to get any wind tomorrow to speak of, so it’s going to be close. We’re going to have to make more birdies and get off to a better start than we did today.”

The Gators are scheduled to tee off starting at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday for the third and final round with fellow leaders Augusta State and N.C. State. At the end of the round, the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Okla. Please follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com and updates at www.GatorZone.com.
