Gator Women Post Second-Straight Shutout; 7-0 Over UCF

With its second straight match in as many days, the top-ranked University of Florida women’s tennis team looked as fresh as ever, posting its second-straight shutout victory to open the season, defeating Central Florida 7-0 at the Ring Tennis Complex on Wednesday.

The win also extends UF’s consecutive dual match win streak to 24 matches and its 109th consecutive win at home, which is the longest active home win streak by any NCAA Division I women’s team in any sport.

Much like Tuesday against USF, the Gators were able to win the doubles point over UCF, but not until being taken to the final doubles court to see how the first point of the day would be decided. The team then followed up the doubles win with an extra strong showing in singles, winning on all six courts in straight sets, even without All-American Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.).

“It was a difficult day to play with the win,” Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We struggled a little bit in doubles at the beginning, but once we figured out that it wasn’t going to be a perfect day to play, then we settled down. I thought we did a good job in singles, really. We talked about that in between doubles and singles to be able to compete; play hard and tough and do whatever it takes. It’s one of those do whatever it takes days.”

“I thought we did a good job, our freshmen in particular,” Thornqvist said. “I was worried that our freshmen were not used to it, maybe a little nervous that they would go off on a walkabout perhaps because of the weather, but it turned out they were, perhaps, the two best players today, so that was nice to see.”

As quickly as the doubles point was won on Tuesday, things started out much differently for the Gators in the battle for the opening point on Wednesday as UCF took 4-1 and 3-1 leads at courts one and three.

With a slightly different lineup from its season opener, Thornqvist went with the duo of freshman Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and senior Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) at the top spot. However, the Gators were only able to hold serve once through the first six games. UF started to turn things after winning two straight to make it 5-3, but then the Knights went on a roll to win the final three games for the 8-3 top court victory.

At court two, it was different start from the others in favor of the Orange and Blue. Senior Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and junior Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) held serve with their counterparts through the first five games to take a 3-2 lead. From there it was all Florida as the junior and senior tandem rolled off wins in five of the last seven games to take the 8-4 win, the second doubles match to go final.

That left the first team point of the afternoon to be decided at court three. What looked to be a close match early on as both doubles teams held serve on three straight occasions to make the match a 3-3 tie, Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) rolled off five straight game winners for the 8-3 point clinching victory. The win not only gave UF its second straight doubles point to open the spring season, but it was also Morgan and Cercone's second straight doubles win this spring.

“I don’t think we played that great at number one doubles,” Thornqvist said. “They really took it to us and we weren’t ready for it, but number two did a good job. At number three, we were down 3-1 and it looked like it was going to be tight on all courts, and I thought our players at number three doubles did a good job.”

Moving into singles, UF seemed to take its game to another level as all six first sets went the Gators' way. With the exception of court one, all first sets were won by at least three games. Morgan seemed to make the quickest work of her opponent at court five as she dropped only one game in the first set for a 6-1 win over Sofia Baptista. She then followed that with a nice 6-1 second set victory to give Florida its second team point for the 2-0 lead over UCF.

Following suit to Morgan was Collins just five minutes later at court three. After opening with a 6-0 first set win over Josephine Haraldson, a second bagel was in order as she did it again with the 6-0 second set victory. The win marked the second for Collins this season and was the second straight set victory for the afternoon for the Gators to give them a 3-0 team point lead.

From there, it was only a matter of minutes before the clinching point was won by the Gators. Hitimana had another solid day on the singles court to take the easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over UCF’s Clare Mendell, giving Florida the overall match win. It’s Hitimana’s second singles win of the year and like the rest of her teammates, moves to 2-0.

The remaining courts were all won in straight sets as well as Janowicz, Cercone and Oyen all moved to 2-0 as well and will take their perfect record into Sunday’s match with Baylor. Thornqvist said he was pleased with the overall performance across the board in singles from his players and thought today was a good test for his team heading into Saturday.

“I was very pleased,” Thornqvist said. “I really was. We were tough and we stuck to our game plan. Olivia (Janowicz), for example, had to come to the net, and she was relentless. She kept coming, she kept coming and it was very good. Sofie (Oyen) played a player who I think is one of the most improved players in college tennis. It was high-level tennis. The pace was good. That kid’s slice bothered us a bit. Sofie did a good job after a rough start to settle down and play well. After these two days of play, I’ve been very pleased. We’re at a very good spot now and I think we’ll be definitely ready for Baylor on Saturday.”

Rosario's First-Half Outburst Helps Gators Sink Gamecocks

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators had a commanding 23-point lead at halftime of Wednesday night's 75-36 win over South Carolina.
Part of the reason why was because senior guard Mike Rosario also led the Gamecocks at halftime. Rosario had 12 points in the first half while the Gamecocks scored just 10.
The Gators broke the game open midway through the first half when Rosario scored 10 consecutive points, boosting an 11-4 Florida lead to 21-4 with 10:12 left in the opening half.
South Carolina's pulse faded fast from there.
For Rosario, his 12 first-half points matched his total from the past two games, road wins at Georgia and Mississippi State in which Rosaria shot just 4 of 21 (19 percent).
"I didn't play like I usually play,'' Rosario said of his road woes. "I was beating myself up about it. My teammates were just telling me to stay focused on the task at hand and get better every day. I feel like I came out aggressive and took what the defense gave me."
Rosario's first basket during his 10-0 run was a layup with 13:35 left. Over the next 3:23, Rosario added a jumper, another layup and capped the outburst with a 4-point play. Rosario nailed a 3-point in front of the South Carolina bench and was fouled on the shot by Brian Richardson.
Rosario sank the free throw and the rout was officially on. Florida's defense forced nine South Carolina turnovers in the first nine minutes, also helping spark Rosario's output.
"We want them to be confused out there,'' said Kenny Boynton, one of Rosario's backcourt mates. "We did a great job. Every time they tried to run a play, we beat them to their spot."
Rosario took the floor Wednesday mentally prepared to not only turn his game around, but to help the Gators continue to stay on theirs. Florida improved to 7-0 in the Southeastern Conference and won its ninth consecutive overall, the program's longest win streak since the 2009-10 season.
"We want to make teams uncomfortable,'' Rosario said. "We are just doing everything that Coach wants us to do. Being aggressive on the defensive end and just taking care of the ball.
"Everyone is doing their job and it's showing. There's just positive energy throughout this whole team right now."
Rosario finished 6 of 11 Wednesday, including a pair of 3-pointers, to finish with 15 points, matching fellow guard Kenny Boynton for the team lead.
While Rosario has bought into Florida coach Billy Donovan's team-first approach much better than a year ago after sitting out a season as a transfer from Rutgers, he can still make Donovan scratch his head.
There was a moment like that Wednesday. The dunk came near the end of the first half. The play started when Florida's Patric Young blocked a layup attempt by South Carolina's Eric Smith that ricocheted off the backboard and almost to half-court.
Rosario grabbed the ball and raced the other way for a two-handed dunk. Rosario was then whistled for a technical because he hung on the rim.
That earned Rosario a glare from Donovan and a spot on the bench for the final minute of the first half.
"I think it was a really good official call by the official,'' Donovan said. "Once the [defender] runs by you just get off the rim."
While Rosario scored more points than the Gamecocks in the first half, Donovan made sure to point out that "he was probably responsible for half their points" due to turnovers and getting called for the technical.
"I don't think Mike was trying to showboat or anything,'' Donovan said. "He just hung up there a little long."
Donovan jabbed at Rosario in a playful manner but wants him to continue to play good defense and take care of the ball to maximize his role in the lineup.
Rosario sounds as if the message has sunk in.
"I was actually mad one time because I didn't get to a rotation and I felt like I let my teammates down at that moment,'' Rosario said. "You always want to be perfect at what you do. That's something we strive to do every day."
For a short stretch of the first half, Rosario was on the top of his game.

Wilbekin Named SEC Player of the Week

University of Florida junior guard Scottie Wilbekin (Gainesville, Fla.) was named the SEC Player of the Week, the conference announced today. This marks the first time a Florida player has earned this honor since Kenny Boynton garnered player of the week accolades on December 19, 2011.

Wilbekin averaged 15.0 points per game and 6.0 assists per contest in UF’s two games last week. At Georgia, he led the team in scoring with 17 points, matching a career-best. The Gainesville native was 7-for-9 from the field against the Bulldogs. Against Mississippi State, Wilbekin notched his third-straight game scoring in double-figures, finishing with 13 points. He was also one assist shy of his second career double-double. This marked the second-consecutive week that Wilbekin had recorded at least nine assists in a game.

The junior guard currently ranks second in the conference in assists per game (5.1) and assist to turnover ratio (2.6). He also is 10th in the SEC in steals (1.8 steals per game). Earlier this season, he and Boynton were both named to the watch list of candidates for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year.

Florida Lacrosse Ranked No. 3 in Preseason deBeer Media Poll

The University of Florida lacrosse team has been selected as the preseason No. 3 in the first deBeer Media Poll, announced on Monday.

The Gators received one first-place vote in the poll, which ranked Syracuse and Northwestern ahead of the Gators. Northwestern returns as the reigning national champions and Syracuse as the national runner-up. Of the Top 20, Florida is set to play nine teams in the regular season including three of the remaining top five. Four of the other five teams in the American Lacrosse Conference were also ranked in the poll.

Florida returns all but one starter from a year ago, where they went 19-3 overall and 5-0 in the ALC.  UF won both the regular season and tournament conference championships and advanced all the way to the NCAA national semifinals.  They became the fourth team in just their third year of existence to advance to the Final Four.

The Orange and Blue played in exhibition last Thursday in an 18-13 win over the England National Team and will open the 2013 season at No. 5 North Carolina on Feb. 9 at 12 p.m.
