Senior
goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) has been named the first
WomensLax.com Player of the Week of the 2013 season, announced by the web site
on Monday.
Meagher
was a key component in the No. 3 Gators 5-3 win over No. 5 North Carolina in
Saturday’s regular-season opener. Meagher recorded nine saves and allowed only
three goals in the contest on 20 shots on goal. She also helped keep UNC
scoreless in the second half after they scored all three goals in the first
eight minutes of play.
The
win marked the first victory over the Tar Heels and the first win over an ACC
opponent. Previously, the Gators were 0-4 against ACC foes with three loses to
UNC and a loss to Duke in the NCAA tournament.
Florida
is back in action Wednesday as it travels to Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. matchup.
