GAINESVILLE -- Sophomore Sharrif Floyd will play multiple positions in coordinator Dan Quinn’s new defense. Quinn said Floyd’s versatility will allow him to stay on the field in most formations. Floyd will play end in the Gators’ base defense and will switch to tackle when the defense is in nickel coverage.
Quinn said having defensive linemen who can play multiple positions allows Florida to present multiple looks, which can confuse opponents.
“It adds value to your defense when guys can play multiple roles,” he said.
The Gators plan to run elements of the 3-4 and 4-3 systems, and although Quinn said the playbook was tough to pick up for some at first, he said the ability to run different fronts will be an advantage when planning for opponents.
Quinn said he will ease the defense into the complicated looks, allowing players to make reads quickly.
“I want you to see the tape and see these guys are really physical,” Quinn said. “You hope that after the tape comes off and after you watch the game, you say, ‘That’s a fast, physical team. They went after the ball; they’re tough, good tacklers.’ ”
